The Chairman of the De Beers group of diamond companies will be awarded by the World Diamond Council at the organization’s annual meeting in Italy on May 14, the council said in a statement. De Beers chair Nicky Oppenheimer will be honored for his role in industry efforts to phase out global trade in conflict diamonds.
President of the World Diamond Council Eli Izhakoff acknowledged Oppenheimer’s contributions, saying that he “sounded the rallying cry” to eradicate the trade in conflict diamonds, and that he was an enthusiastic supporter of the World Diamond Council from its inception in 2000, and also of the Kimberley Process. Izhakoff added that the diamond industry owes Oppenheimer a debt of gratitude.
Oppenheimer was bestowed with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Israeli Diamond Industry at a gala dinner in Tel Aviv last month. IDI Managing Director Eli Avidar told the assembled guests that the award was in recognition of Oppenheimer’s ‘vision, courage and inspiration in leading the world diamond industry for three decades’.
