Surat diamantaires will shut their factories on Thursday to protest the Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) decision to collect professional tax from diamond manufactures and workers.
“There is some issue related to professional tax and because of that small, medium and large factories are facing problems,” said Dinesh Navadiya, the president of Surat Diamond Association (SDA). “So we have announced the shutdown for one day on March 22.”
SDA made the decision at a meeting held in Varachha on Monday. The meeting was attended by more than 500 diamond manufacturers.
Navadiya stated that the professional tax varies as per the earnings slab of the worker. The authorities are asking for taxes for the earlier period also, he noted.
“We had submitted our presentation earlier but the SMC did not agree,” Navadiya said.
