The emerald cut diamond has always be considered a very elegant and sophisticated design. Its rectangular step cut style facets and very open face require a very high quality colour and clarity diamond to produce a flawless appearance. The emerald cut has only very minimal sparkle around its corners but produce magnificent flashes of colour from their large central facets. This classic design is not for the budget conscious as although it is not an expensive cut this design does not work well for diamonds of average or lower grade. The proportions for an emerald cut diamond should be around a ratio of 1:1.5 but can still work well when overly elongated. The emerald cut diamond has been the basis for many of the new patented style diamond cuts including the tycoon cut, crisscut diamond, asscher and prince cut diamond.
